Câu điều kiện If

Câu IF (còn gọi là câu điều kiện) là cấu trúc ngữ pháp dùng để diễn tả một sự việc hoặc kết quả chỉ xảy ra khi một điều kiện cụ thể được đáp ứng. Câu IF gồm hai mệnh đề chính:

• Mệnh đề IF (mệnh đề điều kiện): bắt đầu bằng “if”, diễn tả điều kiện
• Mệnh đề chính (mệnh đề kết quả): diễn tả kết quả xảy ra nếu điều kiện được thỏa mãn

Câu điều kiện loại 1 (First Conditional)

If + S + V(s/es) , S + will/can/may + V (nguyên mẫu)

Cách dùng:

• Diễn tả một khả năng có thể xảy ra ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai nếu điều kiện được đáp ứng.
• Tình huống có thật hoặc rất khả thi.

Ví dụ:

• If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home. (Nếu ngày mai trời mưa, chúng tôi sẽ ở nhà.)
• If you study hard, you can pass the exam. (Nếu bạn học chăm chỉ, bạn có thể đỗ kỳ thi.)

Câu điều kiện loại 2 (Second Conditional)

If + S + V2/ed (quá khứ đơn) , S + would/could/might + V (nguyên mẫu)

Cách dùng:

• Diễn tả một tình huống không có thật ở hiện tại hoặc không thể xảy ra ở hiện tại/tương lai gần.
• Dùng để giả định, mơ ước, lời khuyên nhẹ nhàng.
• Lưu ý: to be thường dùng were cho tất cả các chủ ngữ

Ví dụ:

• If I were you, I would tell the truth. (Nếu tôi là bạn, tôi sẽ nói sự thật.) – Tôi không thể là bạn được
• If she had more money, she would buy a car. (Nếu cô ấy có nhiều tiền hơn, cô ấy sẽ mua ô tô.) – Hiện tại cô ấy không có nhiều tiền

Câu điều kiện loại 3 (Third Conditional)

If + S + had + V3/ed , S + would have + V3/ed

Cách dùng:

• Diễn tả một tình huống trái ngược với quá khứ – điều kiện đã không xảy ra nên kết quả cũng không xảy ra.
• Thường dùng để tiếc nuối, trách móc, suy luận ngược về quá khứ.

Ví dụ:

• If I had known about the party, I would have gone. (Nếu tôi biết về bữa tiệc, tôi đã đi rồi.) – Thực tế tôi không biết nên đã không đi
• They would have won the match if they had trained harder. (Họ đã thắng trận nếu họ luyện tập chăm chỉ hơn.) – Thực tế họ đã không thắng

Câu điều kiện hỗn hợp (Mixed Conditionals)

Thường gặp nhất là loại 3 (điều kiện quá khứ) + loại 2 (kết quả hiện tại):

If + S + had + V3/ed , S + would + V (nguyên mẫu)

Cách dùng: Điều kiện trái với quá khứ, nhưng kết quả ảnh hưởng đến hiện tại.

Ví dụ:

• If I hadn’t missed the bus, I wouldn’t be late now. (Nếu tôi không lỡ chuyến xe buýt, thì bây giờ tôi đã không trễ.)
• If she had taken that job, she would live in London now. (Nếu cô ấy nhận công việc đó, thì bây giờ cô ấy đã sống ở London.)

Câu giả định (Subjunctive)

Câu giả định diễn tả một mong muốn, đề nghị, yêu cầu, hoặc điều không có thật ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai.

Cấu trúc cơ bản

Dạng hiện tại của giả định cách (Present Subjunctive)

S + Verb (nguyên thể) + that + S + (should) + V (nguyên thể)

Không thêm “s/es” cho ngôi thứ 3 số ít, không chia thì

Dạng quá khứ của giả định cách (Past Subjunctive)

S + wish/as if + that + S + V (quá khứ đơn/be → were cho tất cả các ngôi)

Khi kết hợp với một số từ loại khác

Với các động từ chỉ yêu cầu, đề nghị, gợi ý:

Động từ thường dùng: advise, ask, demand, insist, propose, recommend, request, suggest, urge

Ví dụ:

• I suggest that he go to the doctor. (Không dùng “goes”)

• They demanded that she apologize immediately.

Với các tính từ chỉ sự cần thiết, quan trọng:

Tính từ thường dùng: essential, important, necessary, vital, crucial, advisable

Ví dụ:

• It is important that she be here on time.

• It’s necessary that everyone wear a seatbelt.

Với “wish” (ước muốn không có thật)

Hiện tại: S + wish + S + V (quá khứ đơn/be → were)
Quá khứ: S + wish + S + had + V(past participle)
Tương lai: S + wish + S + would/could + V(nguyên thể)

Ví dụ:

• I wish I were taller. (Hiện tại tôi không cao)

• She wishes she had more free time.

• I wish I had studied harder for the exam.

• I wish it would stop raining.

Với “as if/as though” (như thể là)

Hiện tại: S + V + as if + S + V(quá khứ đơn/were)
Quá khứ: S + V + as if + S + had + V(past participle)

Ví dụ:

• He talks as if he were the boss.

• She acted as if she had seen a ghost.

e. Với “It’s (high/about) time” (đã đến lúc)

It’s time + S + V(quá khứ đơn)

Ví dụ:

• It’s time we left. (Đã đến lúc chúng ta đi rồi)

• It’s high time you started working harder.

f. Với “would rather/sooner” (thích…hơn)

Hiện tại/Tương lai: S1 + would rather + S2 + V(quá khứ đơn)
Quá khứ: S1 + would rather + S2 + had + V(past participle)

Ví dụ:

• I’d rather you didn’t smoke in here.

• I’d rather you had told me the truth.

Lưu ý đặc biệt

• Hiện tại: be cho tất cả các ngôi ==> The doctor insisted that he be hospitalized.

• Quá khứ: were cho tất cả các ngôi ==> If I were you, I would apologize.

• Diễn đạt phủ định: Đặt “not” trước động từ nguyên thể ==> It’s important that she not forget her keys.

• Biến thể với “should” (Anh-Anh): có thể thêm “should” nhưng nghĩa không đổi ==> I suggest that he should go to the doctor.
